Manufacturer Juul Labs, Inc. has already settled two lawsuits related to exploding or overheating lithium-ion battery units in their USB-shaped devices. Jennifer Ries, who suffered second-degree burns after her battery exploded while charging a JUUL in her car, won $1.9 million in 2015. Then in 2016, J. Michael Hace won $2,047,800 after an exploding JUUL battery shattered four of his teeth, causing extensive craniofacial damage that required treatment in the ER. However, Juul Labs has also paid to settle several other injury claims over the past few years. Those plaintiffs’ identities and settlement amounts remain confidential, since the lawsuits were filed on behalf of injured minors.
Young people across the country are now filing lawsuits against Juul Labs, maker of the popular JUUL e-cigarette vaping devices. Plaintiffs allege that the company deceptively marketed and labeled their devices as a “safer” alternative to smoking. But in reality, the high concentration of nicotine salts in each JUUL pod is equal to smoking more than 20 cigarettes. JUUL Labs also created “candy-like” flavors — like mango, crème brulée, fruit medley and mint — allegedly to make the products more appealing to minors. Thanks to these marketing efforts, the company saw an 80% rise in high school-aged users and a 50% increase in middle school-aged users from 2017 to 2018. JUUL sales skyrocketed nationwide over the past year, growing from 64 million in Q4 of 2018 to 175 million in Q1 of 2019. More recently, the CDC received reports involving at least 450 “vaping” injuries and lung damage-related deaths affecting users in 33 states as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands.
If you or a loved one used a JUUL electronic smoking device and suffered a seizure, stroke or heart attack or developed vaping-related complications, such as pneumonia, dental issues, lung damage, advanced asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), you may qualify for financial compensation.
